C’est une commande réalisée par Hector Guimard, un architecte à la mode à l’époque. Entre 1895 et 1925, le 16e arrondissement était une ruche bénéficiant de nombreux investissements dans des projets architecturaux. 400 grands immeubles luxueux ont été construits par 200 architectes de l’époque. Dans la moitié sud du 16e, l’ancien village d’Auteuil est un chemin de promenade idéal pour les amateurs d’Art Nouveau. On y trouve une concentration exceptionnelle de bâtiments réalisés par Guimard. Une fois l’exploitation du nord du 16e achevée, les investissements dans la moitié sud ont pris de l’ampleur. L’architecte Guimard a déployé une énergie très productive. Pour trouver une architecture plus récente, comme celle de Le Corbusier, il faut aller plus au sud. Ses réalisations sont dispersées dans la ville voisine de Boulogne et attirent, elles aussi, les amateurs d’architecture. This is the Paris residence, completed in 1911, of a man who was successful in the lacemaking industry in northern France. The commission was given to Hector Guimard, an art nouveau architect, which was the all the rage at that time. The 16th arrondissement was undergoing an investment boom in construction and about 400 splendid mansions were built by 200 architects from 1895 to 1925.Around the old village of Auteuil in the southern half of the 16th arrondissement there are quite a few Guimard-designed buildings so it is an attractive area for those who like art nouveau, all the more so because he was also active when the vicinity around here was targeted for development after the northern half was completed. Regarding the newer Le Corbusier designs, his works are located further south and in the neighbouring city of Boulogne; architecture enthusiasts flock there to see them. Ce quartier, conçu au début du 19e siècle, est traversé par une avenue bordée de somptueux immeubles en pierre et de résidences aux porches imposant. When the European Parliament was formed and women’s rights campaigns were gathering momentum in the 1970s, a Minister of Women’s Rights was appointed in France which was a novelty. A Charter of Women’s Rights was adopted at the European Parliament in 1984. Now that women’s rights are better enforced, with considered equal and continuing to assert themselves, the title of this public office has evolved into the Ministry of Human Rights. The motto of France is “Freedom, equality and fraternity” and the French are uncommonly sensitive to human rights and discrimination. Many French people know more about the indigenous people and discrimination problems in Japan than Japanese people themselves and I am often surprised with the insightful questions people ask me. They don’t spend so much money on ODA but it is part of their collective psyche to assert people’s rights, to take part in demonstrations and actively participate in national campaigns.This is near the triumphal arch in the Avenue d’Iéna. Because it was ahead of its time when it was developed at the end of the 19th century, buildings made of sumptuous stone and the residences with ornate gates stand in decadent splendour. The Majestic Hôtel, which was top class at that time, is here and it often appears in Toson Shimazaki’s work “Letter from France” set around World War I. The headquarters store of Louis Vuitton was, as far as I know, also among these buildings, they specialized in making travellers’ trunks and bags to order. Il est achevé en avril 1973. Lorsque l’on arrive de l’aéroport à Paris, on passe obligatoirement par ce périphérique. Aujourd’hui, il existe une autre voie plus large, plus à l’extérieur permettant d’éviter les embouteillages dans Paris. Toutes les routes de France mènent à Paris. C’est en mars 1974 que la construction du Palais des congrès et de son hôtel sont achevés à la Porte Maillot, une des portes à l’ouest de Paris. La Chambre de Commerce a construit et gère ce bâtiment. Il est composé d’une grande salle de 3200 places et de salles plus petites pour divers événements. Les activités de la Chambre de Commerce ne consistent pas seulement à organiser des réunions ou des conférences grâce aux cotisations de ses membres. Elle administre également différents projets visant à encourager des actions locales, tout en réalisant des bénéfices. Elle gère aussi un aéroport au nord de Paris. Ce n’est pas ce que j’imaginais d’une Chambre de Commerce ! Ces dernières années, le Palais des Congrès se sentant à l’étroit, des travaux d’agrandissement sont réalisés en façade, mais l’aspect global du bâtiment n’a pas changé. Il abrite un centre commercial fréquenté exclusivement par les clients de l’hôtel. Les Parisiens viennent rarement ici. Pendant longtemps c’était un terrain vague sur lequel se trouvaient les vestiges de l’enceinte de Paris. Plus à l’ouest, un autre quartier d’affaires s’est construit au centre de la Défense. Bien plus animé que la Porte Maillot, il attire de nombreux habitants. Le grand magasin japonais Daimaru installé au Palais des Congrès au moment de son inauguration a quitté le lieu au bout de 25 ans. Boulevard Périphérique was built as the number of the cars was increasing. It was completed after being connected to the original, smaller, ring road network in April 1973. When entering Paris from the airport we never fail to drive along this ring road. Now there is an even larger outer route and we can avoid the traffic jams of the city. All roads in France are designed and constructed in such a way as to converge on central Paris.This International Conference Centre and hotel were completed in March 1974 as the western gateway to Paris. There is a grand hall with 3200 seats and numerous event rooms. They were built and are operated by the Paris Chamber of Commerce (a merchant union). They not only host conferences and seminars for those who had paid their membership but operate the local airport and take on various projects to promote regional development and other profit-making activities, very different from Japan. Expansion of the facade only was undertaken recently because the building had become cramped, the overall appearance of the building hasn’t changed however.Parisian do not choose to go there for shopping as this place used to be vacant and deserted place where only remains of castle walls were found. Further west, the business centre of La Défense was completed and has become a vibrant transport hub for suburbanites. Title A name given to the resource La rotonde du Parc Monceau / The rotunda in Parc Monceau / モンソー公園のロトンド Subject The topic of the resource Parc Monceau, Sérigraphie Description An account of the resource Le parc Monceau, entre le 17e et le 8e arrondissement, était un domaine aménagé en 1778 comme réserve de chasse pour le Duc d’Orléans. Quinze ans avant la Révolution française, ce quartier faisait partie de la ville de Paris, alors qu’avant ce n’était que la campagne où étaient organisées des parties de chasse. Ce bâtiment de forme cylindrique était, à l’origine, la Barrière de la rotonde de Chartres, construite entre 1784 à 1787. C’est un des exemples des nombreuses barrières d’octroi qui entouraient la ville de Paris et où l’on appliquait une taxe sur les produits importés. A cette époque, Paris appliquait un octroi sur tous les produits venant de l’extérieur de ses enceintes. Au 19e siècle, la ville couvrait ainsi jusqu’à 60 % de ses ressources financières. Comme le coût de la vie était plus cher à Paris, la population sortait des enceintes pour aller boire à moindre coût. A partir d’avril 1954, l’octroi a été remplacé par la TVA dans tout le pays. On dit que les dernières traces de l’octroi sont les taxes d’aéroport. Parc Monceau, in the boundary of the 8th and 17th arrondissements, was completed in 1778 in a garden of a hunting mansion of the Duc d’Orléans, a member of the French royal family. It was about 15 years before the French Revolution and this space was still open ground despite being in the city so they could enjoy hunting outdoors.This cylindrical building was one of those built from 1784 to 1787 surrounding the city whose purpose was the collection of the aforementioned octroi consumption tax at the gate of Chartres. The tax was imposed on every item which entered Paris and was said to constitute 60% of the entire revenue of the city in the 19th century. Though the octroi tax had become haphazard and nominal in the end, it existed until August 1943 under the German occupation, so goods were more expensive within the city than without. Workers departed the city through the gates to drink more cheaply. It has now changed and the nationwide TVA value-added tax started from April 1954. Je suis surpris de lire les descriptions détaillées des manières de s’amuser à Yoshiwara, quartier de plaisir, que même les Japonais ne connaissaient pas. On raconte qu’après la mort d’Edmond, la vague du japonisme à Paris s’est éteinte. Grâce aux bénéfices réalisés par la vente des objets de sa maison, on a créé le Prix Goncourt en respectant son testament. Aujourd’hui encore, lorsqu’arrive le mois de novembre, les maisons d’édition et les écrivains sont en ébullition. La récompense pour le vainqueur est d’un montant de 10 euros, elle n’a pas changé, ni évolué avec le temps. Bien que la somme soit dérisoire, le livre qui a été récompensé se vend à plusieurs centaines de milliers d’exemplaire et son auteur bénéficie d’une plus grande notoriété. In the books “La Maison d’un Artiste” (two volumes, 1881), Edmond de Goncourt describes the interior of this house in which he lived from 1868 and is furnished with Japanese art objects which he collected as a hobby. Despite these two publications Ukiyoe (wood block art) was not valued by the Japanese at that time, rather as waste paper like newspaper advertisements. It is surprising that in Ukiyoe the customs of prostitution at Yoshiwara, a red light district in Japan, were shown in detail. Interest in Japanese culture in Paris declined when he died. In accordance with his will the Prix Goncourt was funded through the sale of all the art objects here. Even today, in November the literati and publishers are excited to find out who and which publisher will be awarded with this prize. Nowadays there are low interest rates so the prize money is a cheque for a paltry 10 euro, however tens of thousands of books are sold on the back of the publicity and the winner enjoys fame. Je me rends compte que le monde est passé au 21e siècle et je continue à peindre comme coule la Seine… Downstream on the Seine, at the foot of the Pont Mirabeau by the 15th arrondissement, a building was constructed in 1991 which accommodates the headquarters of Canal+ (Channel Plus), France’s first paid cable TV company, and its studios.The Pont Mirabeau, which was made of iron from 1893-95, is famous because of the words in Apollinaire’s poem ‘Under the Pont Mirabeau flows the Seine And our loves…’ and because the poem was popular with chanson singers. Beside this historic bridge you can see a lot of glass-walled buildings with TV antennas stretching high into the sky, showing a rather contrasting landscape. There are two ideas about the time these advertising pillars were authorised: I have heard that it was in 1839 or perhaps it was in 1842 the pillars appeared in Rambuteau. The pillars called Colonne Morris appeared in 1868 (the first year of the Meiji period) and many of them adorn the city of Paris still today. Morris was the name of an advertisement agency which manufactured old theatre posters. Depending on the period the pillars come in many shapes and sizes but the tradition of the tulip-like shape of the roof hasn’t changed since the 19th century and they decorate the streets of Paris flamboyantly. Désormais, tout le monde quitte les villes pour partir dans les stations balnéaires ou à la campagne à la recherche de soleil. Si le Front Populaire n’a duré que deux ans, le système de congés payés a perduré et un véritable culte s’est développé pour le droit aux vacances. Aujourd’hui, elles sont passées à cinq semaines, soit 37 jours de congé payés par an. Pendant les mois de juillet et août, de nombreux touristes étrangers envahissent Paris. Mais une fois que l’on s’éloigne des grands axes, on s’aperçoit que dans les petites ruelles il n’y a pas grand monde et que c’est très calme. The next day the five-day workweek was established, changing working hours from 48 hours per week to 40. For the first time, workers and common people were given vacation. Avoiding the summer heat by taking holidays had been enjoyed by aristocrats, the bourgeoisie and the upper class until then: now all Parisians started leaving the city, rushing to summer resorts in the country in pursuit of the sun.The Popular Front cabinet lasted only two years but the vacation system remained as an almost sacred institution for the French who are now paid for vacations totalling over 5 weeks, 37 days, annually. Cette école a été léguée en héritage par le cardinal Mazarin, premier ministre de Louis XIV. Construite entre 1663 et 1668 (époque du 4e shogunat de TOKUGAWA nommé Ietsuna), elle deviendra une chapelle où est installé le cercueil de Mazarin. Le bâtiment a été conçu par l’architecte Le Vau, auteur d’autres édifices de l’époque tels que les Châteaux de Versailles et de Vaux-Le-Vicomte. Lorsqu’on observe la coupole de l’intérieur, le plafond n’est pas rond, mais ovale. Si un artiste la dessine, on peut savoir s’il a triché en utilisant une photo comme modèle, car il lui donnera une forme ronde due à un effet d’optique. Je reste émerveillé par cet habillage architectural calculé pour que tout paraisse régulier et en même temps majestueux vu du Louvre. En 1805, sous l’ordre de Napoléon, l’Institut de France déménage du Louvre pour venir s’installer dans ce bâtiment qui était à l’époque une ancienne école. L’Institut de France is famous for its cupola (domed ceiling) and it is so well-known that if you say La Coupole it is taken to mean the Académie Française (housed in the Institut de France). There is a restaurant of the same name in Montparnasse. It was a school built from 1663-8, around the time of the 4th shogun Ietsuna Tokugawa,with funds bequeathed by Cardinal Mazarin, Prime Minister under Louis XIV. In the middle was a chapel built to enshrine the remains of the Cardinal and the coffin of the founder was entombed under the dome. The architect was Le Vau, responsible for a variety of buildings at that time, including the Château de Versailles and the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. From the inside you can clearly see that the dome is not circular but oval, the long axis running from side to side. When I see it from the side of the Louvre Palace I am impressed by the fact that it was designed to look massive and noble, but if I were to draw it as a simple dome inspired by pictures or other sources, people would soon realise I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. C’est ici qu’Henry Rousseau, précurseur de l’Art Naïf, a été transporté avant d’y mourir. Il est normal que l’établissement ait cette renommée, car autrefois, dans l’abbaye, il y avait déjà un hôpital pour femmes et un orphelinat. Après la Révolution française, l’hôpital Necker naît du rassemblement de plusieurs hospices se trouvant à proximité. Félicitations à cet hôpital pour son histoire et ses recherches, car c’est ici que le professeur Laennec (1816-1923), invente le stéthoscope et découvre le principe de l’auscultation. A l’époque, on était persuadé qu’il était impossible d’écouter le son du corps de l’extérieur, alors que le stéthoscope est devenu par la suite le symbole du médecin. Bien que résidant à proximité, j’ai ignoré pendant longtemps l’existence de cet hôpital. Rénovés en 1840, le porche et le bâtiment principal qui donnent sur la rue sont restés tels quels depuis près de deux siècles. This is the hospital in the 15th arrondissement, a polyclinic renowned for its paediatric wing. It was to this hospital that Henri Rousseau, one of the forefathers of naïve art, was carried before he passed away. Its fame is no surprise because it was historically a convent and an orphanage, open since the beginning of the 18th century. Many charitable facilities merged to become the hospital Necker after the French Revolution. Professor Laennec, employed here from 1816-23, invented the stethoscope and established principles of its use at this hospital so I take my hat off to its history and research legacy.I hear there was a widespread conviction that it must be impossible to diagnose disease merely by listening outside the body at that time. They have spread so widely that they have become almost a trademark for physicians. I hadn’t known there this famous hospital was here for a long time even though I lived nearby. Je me rappelle avec nostalgie comment j’ai appris de la société française, à travers diverses expériences, comme celle de cet agent immobilier qui nous a arnaqués, moi et mon propriétaire. Finalement, après avoir négocié directement avec le propriétaire, j’ai pu me rendre compte de sa gentillesse. Pour moi, ces résidences en pierre du 19e siècle symbolisent le Paris d’une époque opulente et aussi le centre du monde.</div> Parc de Monceau is surrounded by luxurious 19th century residences. Land sharks developed the area, railroads were constructed, buildings were erected one after another and they made a fortune. Emile Zola’s series of social novels at that time describe the details on their rise and fall.Around here stands the current Japanese Embassy and in the vicinity of the Parc de Monceau the names of famous painters are adopted as street names. There was competition between aristocrats and the nouveau riche to live in such a prestigious area.There was a property letting agent on the semi-basement of the building in the print, I was an Asian art student visiting timidly to pay my monthly rent, so I drew it after 40 years to memorialise it. Both myself and the property owners were been duped by the agent and I ended up negotiating with the owners directly and found that they were good people. I feel nostalgic about how I learned about French society. Ses œuvres en sont la preuve car elles représentent pour la plupart les magnifiques paysages de Paris, qu’ils soient populaires ou non. Bien que M. Akagi a passé une grande partie de sa vie en France, il revenait souvent au Japon et notamment dans sa ville natale d’Okayama. C’est pourquoi en 1992 des connaissances à lui lui ont suggéré d'écrire quelque chose pour rendre hommage à la ville d'Okayama. M. Akagi a adhéré à cette idée, mais voulait faire de ce projet quelque chose de différent et plus personnel. Il a alors commencé à publier ses dessins dans l’une des rubriques du Sanyo Shinbun (un journal de la préfecture d’Osaka). Finalement au bout de 5 ans, 52 de ses dessins ont été publiés dans ce journal et M. Akagi décida d’en faire un livre. Le livre “De Paris” est au final un recueil de plusieurs croquis réalisés par M. Akagi de 1993 à 1997 pour faire connaître son travail au Japon et notamment à la préfecture d’Osaka. A la fin de celui-ci nous pouvons y trouver des explications concernant chacuns de ses paysages.
