Cette deuxième édition contient en fait 105 illustrations, dont chacune est commentée par une note que j’ai rédigée à l’attention des collectionneurs du Paris d’AKAGI. Certains m’ont dit que ce recueil pouvait constituer un très bon guide sur Paris, mais mon idée n’est pas du tout de faire un guide ! Je conçois ce recueil davantage comme les mémoires d’un Japonais à Paris en 2014, retracées sous forme de 100 vues de la capitale. La traduction peut être en anglais ou en français, mais je souhaite que l’original en japonais figure en dessous.</p> This book contains my special selection of 100 views of Paris in lithography. The selection was made by myself from my completed works and may therefore be regarded as my specially edited private collection. I have almost 500 original drawings of Paris after my 40 years of work. The 100 prints I selected for this book were taken from over 100 prints of those 500 drawings. I did not print them especially for this book like Hiroshige’s “100 famous views of Edo” or Hokusai’s “100 famous views of Mount Fuji” so the title of this book may not be appropriate perhaps. This book is rather like a series of notes stating why I printed these particular views. Lorsque ce quartier s’est développé, les rues ont reçu des noms de pays asiatiques. On trouve la rue de la Chine, du Cambodge, d’Indonésie… Celle du Japon date de 1867, elle a donc 150 ans. Quand j’ai appris qu’une rue portait le nom du Japon, je l’ai cherchée et me suis déplacé exprès pour la voir. J’ai été déçu, puisque l’on ne trouve rien de spécial dans cette rue et que personne ne semble y prêter attention. Dans le 16e arrondissement de Paris, à partir de 1918 et jusqu’à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, un quai était nommé Quai de Tokyo, mais le Japon étant devenu un ennemi de la France, le nom change après la guerre et le quai devient Avenue de New York. La place de Kyoto et la place de Tokyo ont été créées en 1997, lors de l’année du Japon en France, en même temps que l’inauguration de la Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris. Il n’existe pas encore de rue portant le nom d’un personnage japonais célèbre. En 2002, la Mairie du 20e arrondissement organise dans ses salons, une exposition de mes œuvres consacrées à l’Est parisien. Cette sérigraphie a été réalisée pour cette occasion. Sur ma lithographie on voit la dernière et unique salle de cinéma du 20e arrondissement. On l’aperçoit depuis les fenêtres du bureau de l’Adjoint au Maire. En 1920, lors de sa construction, c’était une salle de spectacles de 1500 places, dédiée au music-hall et au cinéma. Aujourd’hui, le nombre de spectateurs des cinémas a diminué, la taille des salles diminue au profit d’un plus grand nombre de salles pour diffuser plus de films. The Rue du Japon is located behind the ward office of the 20th arrondissement in Paris. Because many districts were named after Eastern countries when this neighbourhood was developed, the Rue de la Chine, the Rue d’Indonésie, etc. are gathered around here. It was named in 1867 so the names show 150 years of history. I think it is too far off the beaten track to be noticed: I looked for the street bearing the name of ‘Japan’ near and far and was disappointed.There used to be an avenue called Quai de Tokio in the 16th arrondissement from 1918 until World War II but, because it became an enemy country, the name was changed into the Avenue de New York after the war in 1945. It was in 1997 that the Place de Tokyo and the Place de Kyoto were named and the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris was opened marking “the year of Japan in France.” There are no streets named after Japanese persons in Paris yet.In 2002, the City held an exhibition of my works depicting eastern Paris with sponsorship from this ward office, so I created this print. The building which stands in the 20th arrondissement under the window of the assistant mayor’s office and the cinema still remain from 1920, when it was built.
