Cette deuxième édition contient en fait 105 illustrations, dont chacune est commentée par une note que j’ai rédigée à l’attention des collectionneurs du Paris d’AKAGI. Certains m’ont dit que ce recueil pouvait constituer un très bon guide sur Paris, mais mon idée n’est pas du tout de faire un guide ! Je conçois ce recueil davantage comme les mémoires d’un Japonais à Paris en 2014, retracées sous forme de 100 vues de la capitale. La traduction peut être en anglais ou en français, mais je souhaite que l’original en japonais figure en dessous.</p> This book contains my special selection of 100 views of Paris in lithography. The selection was made by myself from my completed works and may therefore be regarded as my specially edited private collection. I have almost 500 original drawings of Paris after my 40 years of work. The 100 prints I selected for this book were taken from over 100 prints of those 500 drawings. I did not print them especially for this book like Hiroshige’s “100 famous views of Edo” or Hokusai’s “100 famous views of Mount Fuji” so the title of this book may not be appropriate perhaps. This book is rather like a series of notes stating why I printed these particular views. Title A name given to the resource La Porte Saint-Denis / The Porte Saint-Denis / サンドニの門 Description An account of the resource En partant de l’avenue de l’Opéra, il faut se diriger vers l’Est pour se rendre à la Porte Saint-Denis. Il y a 50 ans, quand je suis arrivé à Paris pour la première fois, il n’y avait que des commerces de textile et de vêtements, de la Porte Saint-Denis à la place de la République. Ce quartier, appelé le Sentier, regroupait les grossistes de prêt-à-porter où les achats se payaient comptant. Le Sentier est séparé en deux par la Porte Saint-Denis : au sud, on est dans la rue Saint-Denis et au nord, dans la rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis.La Porte Saint-Denis a été construite en 1672 à la gloire de Louis XIV, pour fêter sa victoire sur l’armée du Rhin. Ce fut un exploit, car la bataille avait duré 2 mois avant que l’armée royale ne parvienne à s’emparer d’une quarantaine de forteresses ennemies. Deux ans après, c’est la porte Saint-Martin qui voit le jour un peu plus loin à l’est. Ces deux portes sont toutes deux orientées vers l’Allemagne. Elles sont situées le long d’une grande artère, les Grands Boulevards, construits sur les vestiges de la muraille qui protégeait Paris au 14e siècle. A la fin du 18e siècle, la capitale se développe, le mur de la forteresse est démoli et le souvenir de son tracé est désormais représenté par ces boulevards. Au fil du temps, ces quartiers deviennent très vivants et de nombreux théâtres s’y installent. Cette ambiance animée est fort bien décrite dans le film Les Enfants du Paradis (Marcel Carné - 1945). Here we are entering the eastern side of Paris from the Rue de l’Opéra. When I came to Paris for the first time almost 50 years ago, textile and clothing industries stood rows around here toward the Place de la République. In its centre, there is a cash clothing wholesalers’ street called Le Sentier and the streets are separated south-north by Porte Saint-Denis. Rue Saint-Denis, running to the south from here, and the suburban street Faubourg are in its centre. The triumphal arch of the Porte Saint-Denis was commanded by Louis XIV and built by the city of Paris to honour the victories on the Rhine in 1672. In this war, he was so victorious that as many as 40 fortresses were occupied. On its eastern side, another triumphal arch, the Porte Saint-Martin, stands alongside: both of them look toward Germany. This main street is also called Grands Boulevards. Castles were built in the 14th century to guard the old city of Paris; when Paris expanded in the latter half of the 18th century the remains of disused castle walls were turned into roads and became amusement districts with an array of opera houses.
