Cette deuxième édition contient en fait 105 illustrations, dont chacune est commentée par une note que j’ai rédigée à l’attention des collectionneurs du Paris d’AKAGI. Certains m’ont dit que ce recueil pouvait constituer un très bon guide sur Paris, mais mon idée n’est pas du tout de faire un guide ! Je conçois ce recueil davantage comme les mémoires d’un Japonais à Paris en 2014, retracées sous forme de 100 vues de la capitale. La traduction peut être en anglais ou en français, mais je souhaite que l’original en japonais figure en dessous.</p> This book contains my special selection of 100 views of Paris in lithography. The selection was made by myself from my completed works and may therefore be regarded as my specially edited private collection. I have almost 500 original drawings of Paris after my 40 years of work. The 100 prints I selected for this book were taken from over 100 prints of those 500 drawings. I did not print them especially for this book like Hiroshige’s “100 famous views of Edo” or Hokusai’s “100 famous views of Mount Fuji” so the title of this book may not be appropriate perhaps. This book is rather like a series of notes stating why I printed these particular views. Après l’installation d’une voie ferrée, des spéculateurs développent tout le quartier et réalisent des fortunes en construisant ces immeubles. Dans ses romans sociaux, Emile Zola décrit avec précision l’essor et le déclin de cette époque. Autour du parc Monceau, les noms des rues portent ceux de peintres de renom ; c’est un quartier où de nombreux aristocrates et bourgeois ont vécu. C’est là que se trouve l’actuelle ambassade du Japon. A l’entresol du bâtiment, ici illustré, il y avait une agence immobilière. Quarante ans plus tard, j’ai dessiné ce bâtiment en souvenir de moi-même à l’époque où je n’étais qu’un étudiant asiatique en art qui allait timidement y payer son loyer. Je me rappelle avec nostalgie comment j’ai appris de la société française, à travers diverses expériences, comme celle de cet agent immobilier qui nous a arnaqués, moi et mon propriétaire. Finalement, après avoir négocié directement avec le propriétaire, j’ai pu me rendre compte de sa gentillesse. Pour moi, ces résidences en pierre du 19e siècle symbolisent le Paris d’une époque opulente et aussi le centre du monde.</div> Parc de Monceau is surrounded by luxurious 19th century residences. Land sharks developed the area, railroads were constructed, buildings were erected one after another and they made a fortune. Emile Zola’s series of social novels at that time describe the details on their rise and fall.Around here stands the current Japanese Embassy and in the vicinity of the Parc de Monceau the names of famous painters are adopted as street names. There was competition between aristocrats and the nouveau riche to live in such a prestigious area.There was a property letting agent on the semi-basement of the building in the print, I was an Asian art student visiting timidly to pay my monthly rent, so I drew it after 40 years to memorialise it. Both myself and the property owners were been duped by the agent and I ended up negotiating with the owners directly and found that they were good people. I feel nostalgic about how I learned about French society.
