<text>The completion ceremony was held on March 31, 1889. The Paris Universal Exposition opened in May of that year with the tower as the main feature and the records say that it was open to the public from May 15. The cultural elite were opposed to such a disreputable thing which seemed to be in disharmony with the historical scenery of Paris and they organized a petition. I feel that this can happen at any period. The list of those who signed it is interesting. Now it is the main sight-seeing feature of Paris and we must be prepared for a very long queue
to buy tickets. On the 100th anniversary there was discussion about whether to demolish it because its steel frame was getting rusty and might not be able to stand much longer but more and more people visit it from all over the world and it is safe and sound.</text>
